At the beginning, there were just few friends who had a desire to create wine in Moravia that would be known even all over the world.
However, bringing such a wine into the world, we needed more than a dream, we needed a WINERY of dreams. We managed to buy small land and create a vineyard close to the village Popice, in the historic vineyard route originally called Sonnberg. In the history of 13th century, wines were grown here, so wines from Popice were in demand at European royal families for centuries.
New rows of vines slowly began to appear next to the original old bushes on more than 40 hectares - mainly Riesling and Pálava, under the supervision of experienced winegrower Roman Slouk. Grapes grown in a gentle mode of integrated production went into the hands of talented cellar master Olda Drápal Jr., the first creator of straw wine in the Czech Republic. At the beginning, everything took place in a small rented cellar close to Pouzdřany, but soon we moved into the heart of the Sonberk vineyard. Here, according to the design of the architect Josef Pleskot, we built the first domestic chateau - the modern wine house Sonberk.
2008 was officially our first year under the new roof, under which the wine can live its entire life - grow in the vineyard, ripe in the cellar and then, delight all the senses on the table with a view of Pálava and the Nové Mlýny reservoirs. It was the first time ever that the wine did not have to travel to the city, because the city came to the winery. Sonberk came to life with tasting parties, weddings and concerts.
At the same time, 2008 was the year, which helped to put Sonberk - so also entire Czech Republic - on the wine map of the world. Sonberk's Riesling 2008 won the award as the best dry white wine in the Central and Eastern European region at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) in London. It happened in 2010 and it was the first medal of its kind in the Czech Republic, the first major foreign success with a press conference.
Some might think that with the Decanter Regional Trophy it is time to take a break. But our cellar master Olda did not think so. How long does it take to get the second (wine) Oscar? And will it ever come? In our case, this waiting lasted seven years. It was 2017, when Sonberk’s Pálava 2015 won the Platinum Best in Show award at the DWWA as the best dry white aromatic wine in the world out of more than seventeen thousand samples. And we knew that the desire is no longer just a dream, but that the passion for good wine is a reality that inspires in our country and abroad.
We were not only happy about foreign medals, but every time we managed to get our wine into the Wine Salon, win the Prague Wine Trophy champion medal or shine in the Winery of the Year competition, which we are the only ones in the country to have won twice so far.
And what awaits us in the future? ,,We are planning a lot of news! But before we start to reveal them step by step, we would like to celebrate two decades of our journey together with our guests and fans.
